2) Smiths Lake: walks and canoeing
(Myall Lakes National Park and Port Stephens – Great Lakes Marine Park)

Air/land life: Australian pelicans, Black swans and a great range of birds typical of brackish wetlands are to be encountered. Near the Frothie Coffee Cafe there is a very large camp of Grey-headed flying foxes - on summer evenings the sky goes black as they alight and stream off to the southwest in astonishing numbers (see this news story).

Geological/geographic: Smiths Lake is an ICOL (Intermittently Closing and Opening Lake). There is an interesting walk that brings this to life starting with a quiet walk along the lakeside then returning along the roaring beachfront on the other side of the narrow sandy isthmus.
