3) Myall Lakes canoeing
(Myall Lakes National Park)
Air/land life: Black swans and a great range of birds typical of freshwater wetlands are to be encountered. The lakes are Ramsar Convention Listed wetland site.
Geological/geographic: Myall Lakes is a coastal dune lake system which opens to the sea south in Port Stephens.
Historical: Remains of Neranie, a historic timber town including a mill site and jetty area, are found on the NE side of a promontory jutting into the lake system. Neranie supplied huge amounts of hardwoods by barge to Sydney in the late 1800s. The off-cuts from the timber processing can also be found on the NE side - they form an extensive inundated reef of intriguingly sculptured shapes.
Recreational opportunities: Canoeing. Snorkeling over the historic reef of timber-processing off-cuts. Amazing sunsets over the water by Neranie camping area
Other comments: Best conditions: Light winds for canoeing. Clear water for snorkeling.Fitness etc: moderate fitness & some canoeing skills (otherwise some swimming ability)
